INSURANCE EXPLAINED

There are two main types of Insurance in the Fitness and Martial Arts industry:

Professional Indemnity - this is also known as Professional Liability. As far as the insurance companies are concerned you are running a business and are the ‘Managing Director’. As such you are responsible for telling people what to do and the every day running of that business is your responsibility. If anything goes wrong, that is your responsibility too. Usually this type of insurance may also include cover for Legal help, “goods sold” and slander or libel.

Public Liability - this is often referred to as “member to Member” and what most Instructors do not understand is that they are a “member” of their club or group. PL covers accidents between two or more people participating in your named activity, such as someone being injured by a fall and having an injury which keeps them off work for several weeks or months; in this scenario the injured party would claim off the responsible person’s insurance, be they a student or instructor. PL also covers damage to property (hired halls) and any “third party”; e.g. a Caretaker or member of the public who happen to be injured by a registered student.

NOTE: If anyone is not insured then they are still liable under law and can be sued by the “aggrieved party”. If they are not insured they can be made to pay from savings, property and/or goods, income or other means. In other words, it would be foolish not to protect yourself!

Martial Arts Insurance.

Prices are (from Jan 4th 2011 - Ins. Tax up!):
Professional Indemnity - £71 for up to £2,000,000 cover - £91 for up to £5,000,000 cover and £111 for up to £10,000,000 cover. We recommend that you take out the highest amount you can to cover the unforeseen. Cover for outside UK training too!

Public Liability - we will put the “first named” or “Chief Instructor” on our Public Liability policy for FREE, each year that he or she is a registered current member of MAFCUK.org.

Students - you can currently put them on at just £2.50 per person per year - no limit, no minimum. Member-to-Member, public liability, property, goods sold, world cover.

Fitness Insurance.
(Gym groups or Gym 1-to-1)

Our current prices are (2010):
Professional Indemnity - £70 for up to £2,000,000 Public Liability and £1,000,000 Professional Indemnity cover (included).

Or - £90 for up to £5,000,000 Public Liability cover and £1,000,000 Professional Indemnity cover. We recommend that you take out the highest amount you can to cover the unforeseen.- Call for details.

Optional:
Personal Accident @ £15
Sports Massage @ £44

Personal Trainers:
15 clients @ £99, 6-15 @ £120, or higher if req. - Call for details

Personal Trainers are at a far higher risk working in a client’s home or other surroundings. Cover can be extended.
