 FAQ

[Q] Do we need to prove that we are qualified just to get insurance?
[A] Yes. The insurance is Professional, therefore it is issued under the understanding that you are a professionally qualified person, with professional standards: this is like car insurance, you need a Licence to validate your policy.

[Q] I was awarded a Fourth Dan by may last organisation. I didn’t have to grade for it but they gave it to me anyway. Do you do that sort of thing?
[A] No. If we did that nobody would take us, or you, seriously. Everyone knows that to get proper qualifications you need to be graded by a suitably qualified instructor of your own style. The Insurance companies know this also and may check the source and validity of qualifications in the event of a claim.

[Q] Are we covered for competitions?
[A] Yes you are. However, the insurance specifically covers you and your members, provided that they are all insured as well under the Public Liability. Our insurers are more than happy to speak to you about what is covered and what is not, so please call them a month prior to any events so that you can be assured and advised.

[Q] I teach in 5 different venues. Will I need a separate insurance for each one?
[A] No, your Martial Arts policy covers you for all rented halls you teach in, plus any Freelance positions you may be paid for; e.g. working in a Gym or School.

[Q] Why can’t I get Professional Instructor’s Insurance? I am 16 and a have been given Black Belt in Karate.
[A] The Insurance companies follow the Law. UK Law says that anyone under 18 is not old enough to sign a legally binding contract; which is what insurance is. You need to sort this out with your Karate organisation who should not only advise you but get you covered and training under supervision of an Adult Instructor who has Professional Indemnity Insurance.

[Q] I only want Professional Indemnity. Is that OK?
[A] Not really. You need Professional Indemnity to cover you for what you tell or instruct people to do, then Public Liability for damage or accidents between member-to-member, instructor-to-member or vice versa, member-to-public, etcetera.

MEMO: If you do not have insurance then you are personally liable from your own pocket - or owned property - for claims made against you.

[Q] Why do we have to pay Membership fees as well as Insurance?
[A] We are not allowed to make money from Insurance. MAFCUK operates as ˜non-profit”, so we need to cover our many overheads and expenses. Our Membership fees are the cheapest around and it also helps validate your insurance policy, plus we give you lots of advice, backing and other services too. MAFCUK is simply the best in the UK, or “best in the world” as we’ve been told!

[Q] I am leaving my current organisation. Can you tell me if your require me, as a member of your organisation, to attend courses we do not necessarily want?
[A] No. You do not have to attend our courses. Any courses that are arranged by or through us - by ‘Member Instructors, for example - are purely optional.

UKi Qualifications

[Q] I have never heard of these. Are they valid and recognised?
[A] Yes, on both counts. UKi’s are not only valid and recognised but they offer a standard which is instantly recognised over a variety of fields; e.g. Taijiquan, Yoga, General Fitness, Karate, etc., and are as stable as any other qualification in the UK.

[Q] If I belong to a large Martial Arts association, like a “Style Body”, do I have to choose one or the other?
[A] No. If you belong to a large training organisation, e.g ‘Kendo UK’, you can get them to join in the scheme, or at least the UK branch, by adding UKi’s to existing qualifications issued by an overseas body or HQ. This will give extra credibility to your Instructors when it comes to jobs or hall hire, etcetera. Bonus!
